Bill where would you see Wyatt Kalynuk being slotted if he was in the flyers organization? He is arguably the hawks top prospect (not sure if that is good or bad).

Why did Smith move on after only 1 year as i cant remember. Thanks.

1) He's not the 'Hawks best prospect,

2) He'd be playing bottom two pairs on the Flyers, just like he's been doing for the 'Hawks. Maybe they wouldn't have had to sign Yandle if he were around.

I didn't say he was the top prospect. I said arguably and I should have clarified best D prospect. Not overall.

The Flyers still need to re-sign Travis Sanheim, who is a TOP4 defenseman in our eyes, and Philadelphia has only 4.03M space under the cap per @CapFriendly
. We're really curious how new Sanheim's contract will look. We think his price is around $5M. We'll see.

No way he gets $5M, right? Have we been undervaluing him? I thought $4M was too much. We would have to move someone to make this work. I still think we move someone for cap cushion (minor move), but giving him $5M would mean moving someone out to fit under the cap.

The GM will probably overpay if I had to guess.

His market worth could easily be $5M. Just look at what similar 20+ min LH dmen are getting in his age-range:

No, I get it. I wasn't thinking that much money. We'll see if Fletch can work a deal prior to arbitration.

Arbitration would only result in a 1-2 year deal, correct? Regardless of cap hit, do you think Fletch is saying to Sanheim, you're a placeholder for 1-2 years?

Its actually $4.956 when you move out Cates and Laczynski, while adding Allison.
I think we undervalue him. Most of the stuff I read from writers out of town rave about his advanced stats metrics, and blame most of his issues last year to once in a lifetime bad luck. Pointing to things such as the Save% while he is on the ice (.8856.....)

He played a career high 21:53 minutes per game and his xG was highest among Flyers D by a huge margin. On par with Jared Spurgeon in xG and Mattias Eckholm in shot attempt differential.

Yes, he fell down sometimes. But at the ice time he is most certainly a #3 dman on this team and will be paid accordingly.

I think the Flyers have to make another move to clear the space. But in all honest I think he will come in at around 4.3-4.5

2-year deal takes him to UFA. Losing him for nothing would be poor asset management. And if it's one year and you look to trade him next summer, he's worth less w/o a cost-controlled contract in place.

Did he really though? I’m not willing to give him a Provy like contract, what was the alternative? And I’m not considering the only $4M cap left, there’s more than enough time to figure that out, strictly the Sanheim contract.

They then make a minor trade like NAK to get some cushion.

Agree on the contract. They have options whether it is a one or two year deal. If/when he is signed if he is undervalued by us the. We should still be able to get a good return. Could also include another for a two for one deal. It will be interesting. He could even settle for the one year prove it deal at say 4.25. But yeah. I think York will take his place in one to two years. Quote didn’t work.

Free agent after the season. The Flyers had a bit of a cap squeeze in the 2008 offseason and it was uncertain if Smith would need shoulder surgery that offseason (he didn't). He played one additional season in the NHL.

Alternative would have been to not burn all the cap space before locking up a core piece. Seems like the Flyers were banking on the flat cap depressing salaries. Sanheim waited it out and the market moved in his favor.

He's "worth" $5M right now. He could still settle for less in the meantime, but I expect that's what he'd get in arb.

Why would the Sanheim camp sign a one year prove it deal for low market value? He is not that level of player that would need to do that.

Whatever happened with the domestic issue after he retired? Was there any truth to it that you know? Doesn’t seem to have tarnished anything so guessing not what was originally reported.

I agree with what you said here but lets remember that it's the Flyers who chose arbitration. They have to be banking on something that they feel will hold down Sanheim's AAV. The knew exactly what Ellis and Ristolainen's cap hits were so we can't look at that as part of counting on salaries being depressed.
